Double Cleansing: The Korean Skincare Method That Dermatologists Now Recommend
Double cleansing is one of the most widely-practiced habits in Korean skincare — and one of the most misunderstood in Western routines. Done correctly, it removes SPF and makeup that water-based cleansers miss while keeping your skin barrier intact. Done incorrectly, it strips your skin dry.
Step 1: The Oil Cleanser
Oil cleansers come in three formats: cleansing oils (liquid), cleansing balms (solid), and micellar waters (gentler, for sensitive skin). All work on the same principle — oil-based ingredients dissolve oil-based residue.
Apply the oil cleanser to dry skin, massage for 60 seconds, then add water to emulsify it into a milky texture before rinsing. The emulsification step is critical — if you don't do it, you'll leave oily residue on your skin.
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil
$28 · Olive oil + Vitamin E. The original K-beauty cleansing oil — lightweight, rinses clean, non-comedogenic. Best for all skin types including oily.
Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm
$22 · Papaya enzyme + gentle cleansing agents. Melts from solid to oil to milk — easiest format for beginners. Excellent for heavy makeup.
Step 2: The Water-Based Cleanser
After rinsing the oil cleanser, apply a gentle water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue, sweat, and water-soluble impurities. The key is gentle — you've already done the heavy lifting with the oil cleanser. A harsh foaming cleanser as Step 2 defeats the purpose.
Look for pH-balanced cleansers in the 4.5–6.5 range, without sulfates (SLS/SLES), fragrance, or drying alcohols.
CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
$12 · Ceramides + hyaluronic acid. Non-foaming, pH-balanced, fragrance-free. The gold standard second-step cleanser — actually adds ceramides while cleaning.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser
$15 · Gentle foaming formula with prebiotic thermal water. Good for those who prefer a light foam but want to maintain barrier integrity.
Who Should Double Cleanse?
- Anyone wearing SPF daily (which should be everyone)
- Anyone wearing foundation or concealer
- Oily or acne-prone skin — double cleansing prevents sebum + SPF buildup that clogs pores
- Anyone who has active ingredients (retinol, AHAs) not working as well as expected — incomplete cleansing reduces absorption
Who Can Skip It?
If you wear minimal SPF, no makeup, and have very dry or sensitive skin — a single gentle cleanser is fine. Over-cleansing causes more problems than under-cleansing for sensitive skin types.
